Our Features Contact UsThe Assam Association Singapore was founded in 2014.
The primary objective of the community in Singapore is to foster and promote the rich culture, art, language, customs and traditions of Assam and other states of the Northeast region of India. It also tends to provide a “home away from home” for the people of Assam residing in Singapore – helping them in any way possible.
The first Assamese family to make Singapore their home was way back in 1946. The community has since grown significantly and is now estimated to be more than 250 people.
Assam Association is committed to give their time and effort to demonstrate its rich tradition and integrate it into the multi-cultural environment of our Little Red Dot – Singapore!
The association consists of a Management Committee and various Sub-Committees. They are supported by a team of Advisors.
Management Committee is the core committee, headed by the President, followed by 2 VPs, General Secretary and Treasurer.
Sub-committees help to run the day-to-day operation of the association. They are:
The association has been continuously organizing various cultural activities in line with its objective to foster and promote the spirit of Assam. There are at least two functions held every year to celebrate Bihu, which is the most important festival of Assam.
The community also participates in various other festivals organized by other organizations with a view to spread the rich culture of Assam. It has organized the first ever Northeast Nite to promote and create awareness about this part of India. It also routinely participates in Indian New Year Celebration and Singapore specific festivals under the aegis of LISHA, Spring Festival by Woodland GRC, Indian Festival by Kamala Club of Singapore etc
Its recreational arm is also active in organizing various sports in Singapore.
The association is committed in contributing to socio-economic welfare, both in Singapore and in Assam. Other than organizing various socially beneficial camps like Charity run, blood donation, there are plans to provide financial assistance to charity and social NGO.
As part of its bigger program, it is looking at various ways to bring all states of Northeast India under ONE umbrella.
Assam, a northeastern state of India, is a land of exquisite flowers and rare wild animals. Renowned for its tea, wildlife and silk, Assam is a state with rich biodiversity. Assam meaning uneven is surrounded by majestic Blue Mountains and lush green valleys.
Flowing majestically along the Assam Valley is the mighty Brahmaputra. Its exceptional characteristic is its numerous islands including the world’s largest populated river island, Majuli. Tea which grows naturally in the upper Brahmaputra river valley was first discovered in Assam in the year 1823. Since then tea is being grown commercially. Assam produces 51% of the total tea grown in India and 20% worldwide.
Oil was struck in Assam in the year 1889 and has the oldest refinery in India and the oldest producing oil well in the world.
